History of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70)

The USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is the third Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy, named in honor of Congressman Carl Vinson for his significant contributions to the U.S. Navy. Launched in 1980 and commencing her maiden voyage in 1983, the carrier has participated in several key military operations, including Operation Desert Strike, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Southern Watch, and Operation Enduring Freedom. Notably, the ship was the site of Osama bin Laden's burial at sea in 2011. That same year, Carl Vinson hosted the first NCAA basketball game on an aircraft carrier, featuring North Carolina and Michigan State on Veterans Day. Congressman Vinson, who served 50 years in the House of Representatives and was a driving force behind significant naval legislation, including the Two-Ocean Navy Act of 1940, was honored by President Nixon, Navy Secretary John Warner, and Defense Secretary Melvin Laird in 1973 with a model of the carrier.
