Since her commissioning on May 3, 1975, the USS Nimitz has been actively deployed in various critical operations around the globe. Her maiden voyage began on July 7, 1976, departing Norfolk for the Mediterranean. The vessel returned to the Mediterranean in December 1977 and was later dispatched to the Indian Ocean in September 1979 amid tensions in Iran, where an attempt to rescue 52 U.S. hostages was launched but ultimately aborted. In October 1988, Nimitz supported Operation Earnest Will in the North Arabian Sea. She played a role in Operation Desert Storm after departing Bremerton in February 1991 and was involved in Operation Southern Watch in 1993. An around-the-world cruise in September 1997 saw Nimitz supporting operations in the Arabian Gulf and various United Nations initiatives. Nimitz moved to San Diego in November 2001 and deployed in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and 2005, respectively. Her deployments continued in support of peace and stability, including an eight-month Western Pacific deployment in 2009 for Operation Enduring Freedom. Arriving in Everett, Washington, in March 2012, Nimitz again deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom in 2013. In 2014, Nimitz participated in a historic event with the landing of the F-35 Lightning. Relocating to Bremerton, Washington, in January 2015, Nimitz underwent a 20-month maintenance period starting in January 2016 and completed various training and evaluations in preparation for a 2017 deployment to the U.S. 7th and 5th Fleet areas of operation, returning home in December 2017. In March 2018, Nimitz entered dry dock for a docking planned incremental availability at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, highlighting her ongoing commitment to global operations and maritime stability.
