History of the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75)

The USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), named after the 33rd President of the United States, is the eighth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy. Launched on September 7, 1996, by Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia, she was commissioned on July 25, 1998, with Captain Thomas Otterbein as her first commanding officer. President Bill Clinton and other dignitaries attended the commissioning ceremony. Initially serving as the flagship for Carrier Group Two, she was reassigned to Carrier Strike Group Ten on October 1, 2004. Throughout her service, the Harry S. Truman has participated in numerous operations, including Operation Joint Endeavor, Operation Deny Flight, Operation Southern Watch, Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Summer Pulse '04, and NATO Operation Medshark/Majestic Eagle '04. Most notably, in the first half of 2016, as the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 8, the Harry S. Truman conducted an 8-month deployment in the Eastern Mediterranean against ISIL as part of Operation Inherent Resolve. Since June 2014, she has continuously served as the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 8, maintaining a significant role in U.S. naval operations worldwide.
