About the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78)

The Gerald R. Ford-class is a new generation of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers under construction for the United States Navy, aiming to replace existing carriers with ten new ships. These vessels will begin with the lead ship, Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), which replaces the Enterprise (CVN-65), and will continue with replacing Nimitz-class carriers. Despite sharing a hull design with the Nimitz class, the Ford class incorporates advanced technologies from the CVN(X)/CVN-21 program, including the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS). These innovations are expected to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs by allowing the ships to operate with smaller crews. The class is named in honor of former U.S. President Gerald R. Ford, with CVN-78 commissioned on July 22, 2017, and the second ship, John F. Kennedy (CVN-79), planned to enter service in 2025.
