USS George Washington (CVN-73) is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the United States Navy, named after the first U.S. president and Revolutionary War commander-in-chief, George Washington. The ship, which is the sixth in its class and the fourth Navy vessel named after George Washington, had its contract awarded on December 27, 1982. Construction began with the keel laying on August 25, 1986, and the ship was christened by First Lady Barbara Bush on July 21, 1990. USS George Washington was officially commissioned on July 4, 1992, at Naval Station Norfolk. In 2008, it became the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan. The carrier entered a Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) in August 2017, which was extended due to additional repair needs, and the ship was re-delivered to the Navy in late May 2023.
