About the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77)
USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), the tenth and final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, was christened on October 7, 2006, in a historic ceremony attended by its namesake, the 41st President of the United States, George H.W. Bush. This event marked the first time an aircraft carrier's namesake was present at its christening. The commissioning took place at Naval Station Norfolk on January 10, 2009, with President George W. Bush delivering the keynote address, and over 15,000 attendees present. The carrier was officially delivered to the Navy on May 11, 2009, and assigned to Carrier Strike Group (CSG) TWO for her maiden deployment. After delivery, the ship underwent post-shakedown availability (PSA) maintenance at Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard, which included modernization and maintenance work, completed by January 28, 2010. The George H.W. Bush completed its first missile launch and combat systems ship qualification trials in 2010. On May 11, 2011, under the command of Rear Adm. Nora W. Tyson, the first woman to lead a CSG, the carrier embarked on its maiden deployment. During this time, it participated in multiple exercises, supported Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn, and made several port visits. The ship and its strike group earned numerous awards for their performance. Following a successful deployment, the carrier underwent a four-month overhaul in 2012 and resumed training for future deployments. In 2013, it made history by launching an unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) from its flight deck. The carrier's second combat deployment in 2014 involved operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, earning it significant commendations. After returning home, the George H.W. Bush entered the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in June 2015 for an extended maintenance period, returning to sea in July 2016. The carrier's third combat deployment in January 2017 saw significant action in Syria and Iraq, supporting Operation INHERENT RESOLVE and setting a record for ordnance expended since Desert Storm. In February 2019, the carrier began a 28-month Docking Planned Incremental Availability (DPIA), returning to operational status in August 2021. Following sea trials, the USS George H.W. Bush prepared for an upcoming deployment while supporting training and fleet carrier qualifications for naval aviators.
