History of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72)
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) was laid down in Newport News, Virginia, on November 3, 1984, and commissioned in Norfolk, Virginia, on November 11, 1989. After completing shakedown and acceptance trials, Lincoln departed Norfolk in September 1990, eventually arriving in Alameda, California, via South America. In May 1991, the ship was deployed in response to Iraq's annexation of Kuwait but was diverted to support evacuation operations in the Philippines after Mount Pinatubo's eruption. This led to Operation Fiery Vigil, the largest peacetime evacuation of military personnel and their families. The ship later participated in Operations Desert Storm, Southern Watch, and Restore Hope, among others. In 1995, after supporting various operations, Lincoln underwent a comprehensive overhaul in Bremerton, Washington, before returning to Everett, Washington, in 1997. The ship saw further action in support of Operation Southern Watch and humanitarian operations, including relief efforts after the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia. Lincoln also participated in RIMPAC 2006 and conducted operations in the Western Pacific. After a series of deployments supporting Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, Lincoln underwent a Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) in Newport News, Virginia, from March 28, 2013, to August 15, 2017. Lincoln, now operating from Norfolk, VA, has completed various missions, including providing support for Operation Enduring Freedom and contributing to coalition efforts in the Arabian Sea. Throughout her service, Lincoln has demonstrated adaptability and resilience, participating in numerous significant military operations and humanitarian efforts globally.
