The Utilitiesman (UT) rating in the U.S. Navy was established in 1948, drawing initially from the Water Tender rating, which has been in existence since 1884. The rating, denoted by the Navy Enlisted Manning Code (EMC) H190, focuses on the management and maintenance of various utility systems.
Utilitiesmen are tasked with the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing, heating, steam, compressed air, and fuel storage and distribution systems. Their expertise extends to water treatment and distribution, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, and sewage collection and disposal facilities across Navy shore installations globally.
The training for Utilitiesmen takes place over approximately 13 weeks at a class "A" school located at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. Enlistees in the UT rating are required to commit to at least five years of service.
In their roles, Utilitiesmen are responsible for planning and supervising tasks according to specifications, ensuring operational systems' efficiency, and maintaining combat readiness. They also focus on minimizing environmental pollution's adverse effects.
