History of the Navy Medical Corps

The Navy Medical Corps, comprising over 4,300 active duty and reserve physicians across 23 medical and surgical specialties and more than 200 subspecialties, plays a crucial role in supporting the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. These physicians are stationed in a variety of settings including military treatment facilities, medical education institutions, clinics, hospitals, research units, on ships, and alongside Marine forces both domestically and internationally. They provide vital direct support to Navy and Marine Corps commands, squadrons, battalions, and units, and are actively involved in deploying for combat operations, disaster relief, and humanitarian assistance missions to deliver top-tier medical care in any setting. The official anniversary of the Navy Medical Corps is celebrated on 3 March 1871, a date commemorating the passage of the Appropriations Act which formally recognized Navy physicians by granting them ranks comparable to their line counterparts, acknowledged their essential role within the staff corps, and introduced the title of “surgeon general” for the head of the Navy Medical Department. This act did not mark the beginning of uniformed physicians in the Navy or the establishment of the Navy Medical Department, but it did significantly formalize the status and structure of Navy physicians within the military's medical framework.
