NMCB-3 History

The 3rd U.S. Naval Construction Battalion (NCB), one of the first Seabee units in World War II, played a crucial role in constructing bases in the Southern Pacific, operating as autonomous detachments across the Marshall Islands campaign. After disbanding in 1944, it was reactivated in 1950 in Port Hueneme, California. Over the years, NMCB THREE engaged in significant construction projects, including building Naval Air Station Cubi Point in the Philippines, Marine Corps Air Facility Futema in Okinawa, and participating in Vietnam, constructing over 500 facilities. The battalion also undertook disaster recovery and construction operations in Guam, Diego Garcia, and responded to various natural disasters, earning multiple recognitions, including the "Best of Type" and the prestigious Peltier Award. Their deployments spanned global theaters, from disaster relief in North Africa to supporting operations in Iraq and Kosovo. Notable for its mobility and versatility, NMCB THREE has consistently demonstrated excellence in construction, engineering, and disaster recovery, exemplified by their awards for efficiency and personnel programs. Their legacy of contingency construction and disaster recovery has been distinguished and enduring, reflecting the Seabees' "Can Do" spirit across decades of service.
