NMCB-1 History
The Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ONE (NMCB-1), known as "The First and the Finest," has a distinguished history that began during World War II. Commissioned on March 15, 1942, as Naval Construction Battalion ONE, it was soon deployed to the South Pacific where it undertook crucial construction projects including runways, base facilities, and fuel storage tanks, predominantly around the Tonga and Samoan Islands. Following its decommissioning in 1944, it was re-established in 1949 as part of a reorganization that introduced Mobile Construction Battalions, with NMCB-1 being commissioned at Little Creek, Virginia, before moving to Davisville, Rhode Island, in 1951. Throughout its history, NMCB-1 has been deployed across the globe, from Puerto Rico to Antarctica for Operation DEEP FREEZE II, and was the first Atlantic Fleet Battalion to participate in the Vietnam conflict, with four deployments between 1966 and 1970. Post-Vietnam, the battalion moved to Gulfport, Mississippi, and has since been involved in numerous operations, including disaster relief in Guam, American Samoa, and South Florida, construction in support of Operation RESTORE HOPE in Somalia, and support in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. It has also been active in the Pacific, notably redeploying to the Philippines in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and performing disaster recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Katrina. Additionally, NMCB-1 has supported operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, demonstrating versatility in both combat and peacetime construction operations across multiple continents. Over its years of service, NMCB-1 has received numerous commendations, including five Navy Unit Commendations, four Meritorious Unit Commendations, and ten Navy “E” Ribbons, marking it as a unit of excellence and a testament to its enduring legacy and contributions to global operations and disaster relief efforts.
