Construction Battalion Maintenance Units (CBMUs) have played a vital role in U.S. Navy operations since World War II, with 136 units initially established. During the Vietnam War, two units, CBMU 301 and 302, were activated. Post-Vietnam, CBMU 302 was retained, and further realignments led to the formation of CBMU 202 and 303. CBMU 303 was commissioned on August 21, 1993, at U.S. Naval Station Treasure Island, California, drawing personnel from various Public Works Centers and Naval Mobile Construction Battalions. Originally headquartered at Treasure Island, it was relocated to San Diego in September 1994, with detachments spread across California and Hawaii. CBMU 303, though relatively new, has a rich history inherited from its precursor commands. It has been actively involved in operations such as the civilian strike support at Subic Bay and deployments to Southwest Asia during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Its members have contributed to various projects, including the Marvin Shields Memorial in Washington, honoring the only Seabee to receive the Medal of Honor.
