Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit (CBMU) 202 History

Since its inception on March 5, 1942, the Seabees have become an essential component of the U.S. Navy, participating in every major American conflict, contributing to humanitarian missions, and aiding in global community and infrastructure development under the motto “We Build, We Fight.” Originating in WWII with 136 Construction Battalion Maintenance Units (CBMUs), their presence was notably sustained through the Vietnam War with the activation of CBMU 301 and 302, and further expanded in recent realignments with CBMU 202 and 303. CBMU 202, established in February 2005 in Virginia Beach, VA, specializes in providing public works operations, maintenance, and repair services at Forward Operating Bases and Expeditionary Medical Facilities, along with Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief (HA/DR) and Defense Support Civil Authority (DSCA) missions. Initially spread across several locations, it now operates with an active detachment in Jacksonville, FL, and two reserve detachments in Jacksonville, FL, and Norfolk, VA. Historically, CBMU 202 has been instrumental in executing CONTINUING PROMISE (CP) and SOUTHERN PARTNERSHIP STATION (SPS) exercises, focusing on medical, engineering, and veterinary humanitarian assistance in Central and South America to bolster partnerships and response capabilities for Foreign Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief (FHA/DR). Despite not deploying as a whole unit, CBMU 202 members have fulfilled over 30 Individual Augmentee (IA) assignments across multiple theaters, including Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Africa, and Guantanamo Bay, providing critical engineering and construction support to U.S. government agencies and international partners.
